Colombia is more that its excellent coffee; it is a country with a rich indigenous history, culture, and biodiversity, that are represented by gorgeous handcrafts or “artesanÍas” made by large groups of communities across the country.  Even though the biggest markets can be found in Bogota, the capital city, each region also has its own cultural places where these are offered, and each region has a representative handcraft, and the most relevant are:

  • Traditional “mochilas”, which are a indigenous- made bags, very common around the Caribbean coast, and is consider the most practical, beautiful and uniquely Colombian souvenir.

  • “Ruana”: It is a poncho- like garment made of wool that is traditionally made in Boyacá-Colombia located in the Colombian Andes. The word Ruana came from a Chibcha word meaning “land of blankets”. It is typical of this region because its high altitude near to the Paramo moors made it quite cold, making the ruana a convenient item of clothing.
